Race History
The race was first run in 1870, with the winner that year a grey horse called Sir Robert Peel.
Several horses have won both the Irish and English Grand Nationals, although as yet it’s never been done in the same season. Numbersixvalverde was the most recent runner to land both high profiles races after taking the Aintree showpiece in 2006, one year after winning the Irish version.
Popular grey Desert Orchid won the race back in 1990 as an 11 year-old with Richard Dunwoody doing the steering, while more recently jockey AP McCoy, trainer Jonjo O’Neill and owner JP McManus teamed up when Butler’s Cabin landed the spoils in 2007.
